Today I am going to solve the gun problem in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone seems to agree that mass shootings are tragic, gun violence is terrible, murder is bad, and stuff like that. The contentious part seems to be the individual right to have guns balanced with the responsible ownership and use of such things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I understand. I mean, I don&#8217;t have a gun so I&#8217;m going to paint a similar picture. I do most of the cooking in the house and like the block of cooking knives we own. Knives can be used to kill people; I&#8217;m not sure how many people are killed by knives each year. It&#8217;s probably a lot. But just because people get stabbed with knives or have their penis cut off (is a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_and_Lorena_Bobbitt\">Lorena Bobbitt<\/a> reference too old to make?) I don&#8217;t want anyone to take away my knives just because of the foolish acts of others. <em>I&#8217;m<\/em> not going to stab anyone or slice off a penis. I just had to cringe and walk away from my computer after typing that. My point is: please don&#8217;t take my knives.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I also see where I don&#8217;t want the general public fully armed with knives, demanding their right to carry knives everywhere. When I walk into Kroger each day to get our box of wine and the sweet treats my <a href=\"https:\/\/zoomarble.space\/zoomarble-site\/health-stuff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doctor recommends<\/a>, I don&#8217;t want to feel compelled to carry my chef knife, waving it in front of me, fending off the other machete-wielding shoppers all trying to get a good deal on perfect portion chicken breasts. I need two hands to steer the cart and I don&#8217;t want to have to carry a knife in my teeth like a Bandido. It would cause discomfort with my fillings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So here is why knives are not a national issue: Most people are sensible about knife ownership. Therefore, no one is trying to ban knives, assault knives, semi-automatic knives (like a turkey carving thing), or whatever. And again, I appreciate that because I don&#8217;t want to slice a loaf of French bread with a soup spoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think a vast majority of gun owners are responsible with their gun ownership. It\u2019s the ones who are not acting responsibly who make a bigger splash on the news. I continually hear, \u201cGuns don&#8217;t kill people, people kill people.\u201d But I would like to suggest an argument that is the logical extension of that: Guns and people don&#8217;t kill people, <em>bullets<\/em> kill people.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My solution: I propose placing a tax on ammo that raises the price of a single bullet to $600. Yes, that is something like a 180,000% increase, which is an unusual tax amount, but the results are compelling. Bullets come in boxes of, what? Like a hundred? So, that box of ammo will be $60,000. You can have all the guns you want and you can have as many bullets as your budget allows. Use them sparingly. Want to shoot a deer? That&#8217;s $600. Make that shot count! Want to go on a leisurely drive-by with your AK and spray down a rival hideout? At 40 rounds per second for an effective 15-second maneuver, it costs about $360,000. It still sends a message to your rival; it says you have a lot of money you are stashing somewhere. They will be looking for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Editor&#8217;s note: Mr. Swetnam makes up a lot of numbers. They are probably in the ballpark. It&#8217;s not just because he is too lazy to Google hard numbers regarding firearms and assault weaponry, it&#8217;s because he doesn&#8217;t want to end up on yet another watchlist.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the far right gets upset over this proposal, claiming it curtails their rights, here is the rest of the proposal: the excess windfall of ammo taxes would be given to the military. You&#8217;re not against a strong military, are you? (I would prefer the money to go to NASA, but I said it was a compromise.) Also, The Second Amendment, if you would bother to read it, which I haven&#8217;t, does indeed state that we have the right to bear arms. It does not say anything about a right to ammo. The founding fathers likely left that open to tax the crap out of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alright, that solves the gun problem.
